What is defining the Metropolis? |
The Metropolis attracts visitors from the surroundings and from other countries as well. It is taking active part in defining the global agenda in Science and in the Arts by producing an environment of creativity and exposure. In my opinion it is not a question of size or place – there are many cities around the globe with millions of inhabitants who are having minor influence on the global agenda. More conditions have to be present to create a Metropolis, that is: the presence of finance – the presence of the arts and cultural life, and the presence of the political power having interest in bringing the two together in collaboration. In that sense I will consider Reykjavik a Metropolis – maybe it is driven by the necessity as a result of the small population. Reykjavik needs to promote itself abroad to uphold a market large enough to feed the artists of Iceland. The home market is actually not big enough and that makes communication so vital to uphold the variety of the Reykjavik arts. To make this communication possible, as an artist, you need finance to produce, to travel, to marketing and you need an administrating sector to help the promotion of the branch itself. On the other hand you need to attract artists from abroad to perform in Reykjavik to nurse the inhabitants, to attract visitors, and not at least – to inspire the upcoming artists, the “grassroots”. That is what I call “the two legs” of cultural policy in the Metropolis – the dialectical communication. What we see is, that we need a financial sector that is willing to take risks to support the arts, who are willing to take risks in coming up with new and provocative ideas – and this healthy synergy is to be promoted and nursed by the administration by presenting the best possible guidance and expertise. |
