A warm welcome to the forum for List&AST&List.
My hope is that we will have many good discussions here and will come out with a great event in May 2009.

Thank you, Poul! I just signed in, and I am very curious about this whole deal... I got back from Tanzania two days ago, so I am still trying to find out exactly where I am and why.
I will send more documentation soon!

Hi Vidar
Maybe you are right!
But a Motropolis will still be a Metropolis - even if it is broke!

Hi! I was thinking about that today! Is a certain amount of money floating neccesary to create a metropolis. Is it bad with to much money? Will, for example the new supersustainable citys that they are building in Dubai become Metropolis??? Johanna

Hi! I dont know? but i think money - in it self - dont create anything. Artists create something, But we need money to build the stuff (and to live too) - ie. No Money - No Art!

Hello everyone!
I think questions about money and economy is very interesting as a symbol on something else. In Norway there is an author and professor in sociology that last year published a book called " storeulvsyndromet", Thomas Hylland Eriksen. Translated it would be something like : the syndrom of the big wolf. In this book he discusses money, living conditions and similar, and he tries to measure it with what makes people happy according to statistics...It is interesting I think. And it shows how people always think that more of the luxurious things in life would make them even more happy, while it actually is other aspects of life that lead you into happiness. That we seem to have forgotten or lost this connection to happiness in todays western world, and actually need to reconnect to this again. Maybe something we all know deep inside, but still interesting because of the way he links it up to different surveys and the like.
Like, why is it like a boost of academics, scientists and others studying happiness nowadays? Why this need to define or redefine happiness right now?
I think money is very much connected to the defintion of "Metropolis", but it would be very interesting to try to redefine nowadays what actually is of value for a good living. What creates a wellfunctioning society....How can we be together in this without blowing it for someone? Without putting up strict restrictions and rigid definition of everyones path to a satisfying way of living....Tricky,
yes!

And I forgot to say, this is where the art comes in. To communicate these complex issues. This is also why I believe in a support in art project from the govermental side. But then the art world must always strive towards communicating outside its own sphere. Good projects do that, definately.

I write in one of the texts that - What we see is, that we need a financial sector that is willing to take risks to support the arts, who are willing to take risks in coming up with new and provocative ideas – and this healthy synergy is to be promoted and nursed by the administration by presenting the best possible guidance and expertise.
But then came the financial crisis - it opens new perspectives, and question that statement. I still think - in a way that I am right, but....
